August 28 (Tuesday) :Sustainability: The New Economy Presentation
POSTPONED UNTIL THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25th 2007
VSN and the Vernon Economic Development Association (VEDA) are cosponsoring a presenation regarding Sustainability: The New Economy. The speaker will be Fred Schnook, former mayor of Ashland, who is one of the Midwest's premiere presenters on sustainability and the Eco-municipality movement. The presentation will be Tuesday, August 28th at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Conference Rooms - downstairs - at the Vernon Memorial Hospital. Everyone is welcome to attend and there is no charge. Feel free to come early for a networking session at 6:30 p.m.

July 13 (Friday): Vernon County Land Conservation Committee Meeting
The Vernon County Land Conservation Committee will be meeting Friday, July 13th to vote on a possible moratorium on any construction of animal feeding operations of 500 animal units or more. Those interested in learning more about this issue should attend. The meeting will be held on the Third Floor of the Vernon County Courthouse and will begin at 9:00 AM.

June 27 (Wednesday): Kickapoo Citizen Water Monitors Training Session
Gary Thompson, Coordinator for the Kickapoo Citizens Water Monitors (KCWM) will be hosting a training session for those interested in participating in the Valley Stewardship Network's Water Quality Monitoring Program. The session is also for those of you who are just interested in learning more about the citizens monitoring program. June 10 (Sunday): CAFO Public Forum
A Public Forum is scheduled for Sunday, June 10th in regards to the proposed hog confinement operation (CAFO) in Vernon County. The event will take place at the Western Technical College in Viroqua. A potluck will begin at 6:00 PM and the public forum will follow at 7:00 PM. Kelly Jacobs from the Land & Water Conservation Department will be on hand to answer questions. Anyone interested in learning more about CAFOs and in sharing their thoughts or ideas regarding the proposed Vernon County CAFO are encouraged to attend.

The Prairie Enthusiasts and local naturalist Bob Lee are hosting a leisurely walk in search of the original plant communities along the bike trail in Sparta. June 2 (Saturday): Kickapoo Valley Reserve - Kickapoo River Cleanup
The Kickapoo Valley Reserve is sponsoring a Kickapoo River Cleanup as part of National River Cleanup Week. The cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, June 2nd. The event will focus on removing trash and litter from the main channel of the Kickapoo between Ontario and La Farge. Volunteers are needed to paddle the river or walk the streambanks. May 26 (Saturday): Papenfuss Trout Stream Trek
The Mississippi Valley Conservancy is hosting a trek through the Papenfuss property as part of their Linked to the Land free outdoor event series. Come explore this property to discover its beautiful blufflands, stream valley and coulees that remain largely undisturbed. Fly fishers are welcome to try their luck in the clear, cold-water trout stream. The trek may lead you to see a large dolomite "castle-rock" and an ancient burial mound on the ridge above the valley. May 20 (Sunday): Kickapoo River Cleanup
Come enjoy a day on the river! Due to the success of the May 5th VSN Kickapoo River Cleanup, a handful of volunteers and VSN members are headed back to the river for a follow-up cleanup. Volunteers are needed to help remove trash and litter from the main channel of the Kickapoo River between Readstown and Soldiers Grove. May 19 (Saturday): KVR Woodslands to Wetlands Hike
Spend the morning exploring the varied habitats of the Reserve and searching out their avian inhabitants. Visit wetlands, grasslands, and woods. Runs from 8 AM-11AM. $5/adult, $4/child, limit 25. Click here for more details.
May 16 - 18 (Wednesday - Friday): Garlic Mustard Pull - Volunteers Needed!
Spend the morning, afternoon, and/or evening assisting local volunteers in removing invasive garlic mustard plants from a beautiful section of the Kickapoo Valley. Time is of the essence as garlic mustard is in full bloom and must be pulled and removed before the plant distributes its seeds. Garlic mustard is destroying many native plant species and woodland environments across Wisconsin and has recently spread throughout Southwestern Wisconsin. Volunteers and VSN Coordinators will be meeting Wednesday, May 16th through Friday, May 18th in Avalanche along the West Branch of the Kickapoo River. Click here for more information.

May 16 (Wednesday): Global Warming and Wisconsin
Global Warming with a focus on Wisconsin will be the theme of a free presentation and discussion held at 7 PM in the basement of the Good Shepard Luthern Church in Viroqua. Ryan Schryver of Clean Wisconsin, a non-partisan environmental organization, will first provide an overview of global warming, and then zero in on the effect that it is having on Wisconsin's environment, culture and economy. Ryan has been trained by several of the nation's leading climatologists and global warming experts to lead discussions on the topic of climate change. Click here for more information.

May 12 (Saturday): Chainsaw Safety Workshop
Loggers, landowners and arborists are invited to participate in a chainsaw safety seminar, a hands-on workshop co-sponsored by the Kickapoo Woods Cooperative(KWC) and the Kickapoo Valley Reserve. Enrollment is limited, but the KWC will schedule additional sessions of chainsaw safety training whenever sufficient people express an interest in the class. The class will meet at 8:00 am May 12 at the Kickapoo Valley Reserve Visitor Center one mile north of La Farge on Highway 131. Each participant will receive a certificate of completion. May 12 (Saturday): Sister City Project Fundraiser
Join the Sister City Project for a day of outdoor fun to support the educational/environmental/health projects that the Sister City Project provides to the residents of the Chacocente Reserve, Nicaragua. There will be a water quality monitoring demonstration, bird walking tour, and a benefit meal. The event will be held at the Leeward Farm, follow Highway 131 between La Farge and Viola. From 9-10:30 AM. Youth will have the chance to use binoculars and spotting scopes to identify spring migrating birds. Guided hikes will focus on bird identification, habitat, nesting and territories, and migration. Cost is $4/child. Click here for more details.

April 28 (Saturday): MVC Ridgeline Hike with a View
Come explore the bluffs on the south side of La Crosse with Executive Director Tim Jacobson, who will lead you up a winding trail through the woods on the Welch and Juniper Partner tracts. From that vantage point, participants will have a raptor-eye view of the city, the twisty backwaters, the islands of Pool 8 of the mighty Mississippi, and east toward a scenic valley. April 21 (Saturday): Mushroom and Maple Syrup Workshop
The public is invited to a workshop on growing, producing and harvesting nontimber forest products, including shiitake mushrooms and maple syrup. The Kickapoo Woods Cooperative is sponsoring the event, which will be held on the Dan Badtke farm between Viroqua and La Farge. Participants will visit the maple woods and hike down to the sugar shack to see Badtke’s maple syrup operation. We will visit shiitake and other mushroom production areas, in a hardwood forest. Each participant will inoculate logs with shiitake spawn to take home. Bring a drill if you have one and a 5/16” screw tip augur or brad point bit. The workshop begins at 10:00 AM and costs $10 for Kickapoo Woods Cooperative members, $20 for non-members, and this includes the cost of materials for the shiitake log you can take home for your own production. April 21 (Saturday): Earth Day Forest Fair & Clean up- Volunteers needed!
Celebrate Earth Day and the 50th Anniversary of the Black River State Forest by volunteering to help pick up trash in the forest. Following the morning clean-up, there will be a celebration at the Castle Mound Campground, in Black River Falls. Free lunch will be provided to all volunteers. Following lunch, there will be kids activities, a demonstration on planting trees, and a guided nature hike along the Castle Mound trail. The program is free to the general public. All ages and families are welcome. Dress for the weather. Pre-registration is required for the morning clean-up. A great opportunity exists for landowners and people involved with the forest products industry to learn about sustainable forestry in the Driftless Area. This event will be hosted by The Nature Conservancy, Minnesota DNR, U of M Extension, Minnesota Land Trust, and the Minnesota Forest Resources Council at Saint Mary's University of Minnesota in Winona. On Saturday,March 24, 2005 at 10:00 AM, the Kickapoo Woods Cooperative will sponsor a workshop on how to manage forested areas for maximum economic return as well as health of the forest ecosystem, wildlife habitat, esthetic goals, or whatever the landowner’s objectives are for their property. The workshop will focus on the three primary practices used in timber stand improvement: weeding, pruning and crop tree release. Click here for more information.
March 23 (Friday): Aldo Leopold Nature Center Fire Burn School
Instructor Tom Aranow will provide a fundamental understanding of fire behavior and the use of basic techniques for prescribed burns initiated for the purposes of ecological management. This training is recommended for those who are interested in serving as
a volunteer with most conservation organizations, but is not sufficient to qualify participants for a TNC prescribed fire crew. This class is an introductory program for those who would like to work on a fire line under the supervision of qualified supervisors and burn bosses and is recommended for those who wish to possibly pursue S-130/190 certification. This is a class offered by the Driftless Folk School. Participants in this class will receive an overview of the owl species of Wisconsin, as well as of the role owls play in the environment and basic owl biology. Then, the class will head outside to listen for owls. CD media with calls will be used to familiarize everyone with the different calls that are made by resident owls. February 17 (Saturday): MVC mid-winter hike at Tunnelville Cliffs
Join us for a mid-winter hike at MVC’s Tunnelville Cliffs property where we will experience the subtle and quite beauty of the Kickapoo Valley. See majestic cliffs, delicate frozen springs and even some of the property’s year-round residents as we work our way along winding paths through woodland and grassland environments. This is a family friendly hike in the snow that will take about two hours followed by a bonfire with hot chocolate. Bring warm clothes, including snow-ready boots, along with your favorite winter poem or other reading. MVC’s Restoration Biologist, Jessica Bolwahn will be your guide . February 1 - 2 (Thurs. & Fri.): Riverine Wetlands Conference in La Crosse
Wisconsin's water-rich landscapes are drained by more than 32,000 miles of perennial streams and rivers. Hundreds of thousands of acres of diverse wetland habitats are associated with these treasured waterways. Riverine wetlands are created and maintained by the flows and floods of adjacent watercourses, and wetland habitats in turn provide critical water quality, water quantity and habitat functions that support the health of streams and rivers. Protection of these riverine wetlands is vital to watershed health requiring collaboration among wetland-focused researchers, agency staff, private professionals and conservationists. Toward this end, Wisconsin Wetlands Association will convene members of the wetland community of the Great Lakes region to discuss riverine wetlands. Click here for more information.

Richard Bannen of the Prairie Solar Power and Light Co. in Prairie du Chein will be with us to talk about wind, photovoltaic, and solar thermal systems. January 29 (Monday): Jersey Valley Informational and Public Comment Meeting
The Jersey Valley Lake and Dam Project will be discussed on Monday January 29, 2007 at the Westby Rod & Gun facility in Timber Coulee (County Highway ‘P’) from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.
This is a general information session where members of the community are welcome to offer their thoughts, opinions, insights and raise questions and concerns on the proposed repair of the Jersey Valley Dam and restoration of the Jersey Valley Lake. The meeting is being sponsored by the Vernon County Land & Water Conservation Department, with support from the Westby Rod & Gun Club.
There will be a brief presentation on the history of the dam and lake, the exact nature of the problem being addressed, and a report on the status of the project. At this time, speakers will be limited to 5 minutes so everyone can have a chance to participate. Written comments are welcomed and appreciated as well.

The Vernon County Land Conservation Committee is responsible for recommending ways to redesign Jersey Valley County Park. You are invited to this public meeting concerning our county park and the West Fork of the Kickapoo River. Meeting will be at the Ag Service Center 220 Airport Road in the conference room. December 18 (Monday): Your Input Sought on Jersey Valley
A public meeting will be held from 7 PM to 8:30 PM in room 159 of the WTC downtown Viroqua. The purpose of this meeting is to gather information from the public on natural, historic, economic or cultural resources that may be impacted by the rehabilitation and repair of the Jersey Valley Dam. These may include (and are not limited to) air quality, groundwater, historical buildings, public safety, endangered species, fish/wildlife habitat and cropland. Other information will be provided on the background and history of the dam and on the federal dam rehabilitation program. Different ways to fix the dam will NOT be discussed at this meeting. The Kickapoo Woods Cooperative (KWC) is offering a Level 2 Chainsaw Safety / GOL (Game of Logging) class on December 6 near La Farge. The KWC regularly offers level 1 chainsaw safety training twice a year, usually in October and April, and you must have taken that class to be eligible to take this more advanced training. Forest Management planning will be the subject of a seminar at Norskedalen Nature and Heritage Center near Coon Valley on Saturday, November 11 at 10:00 am. The event will begin with a presentation at the Norskedalen Visitor Center and then continue with a visit to the woods to see the forested areas discussed. The third annual Kickapoo Reserve Dam Challenge Triathlon will welcome athletes from all over the Midwest. September 17 (Saturday): Kickapoo Forestry Guided Hike - Click For Details
Starting at 10:00am, Paul and Marcia Bader, S3711 Green Hollow Road, west of La Farge (608-625-2515; domehome@mwt.net). will host a woods walk. Hikers will see a pine plantation thinned three years ago, a site selectively cut for timber stand improvement and maple regeneration in December of 2002, and a south-facing slope where they are encouraging red oak regeneration. Above this is a plantation with walnut and European Larch, but that’s a steeper climb. Hiking will be mostly easy with some hilly parts. We will see a variety of forest ecosystems and environments, with a discussion of responsible forestry management practices ongoing. The program for maximum long-term economic gain preserves a high percentage of the live high-grade trees so that they continue to increase in value. A range of approaches to forest management will be discussed at each site, looking at different objectives a landowner might have. Paul Bader will lead the hike. Bader has worked in his woods and at lumber mills since 1971, and studied Biology at UW-Whitewater. Expected to end around 2pm. Click here for more details.

Join the Kickapoo Citizen Water Monitors from 10 AM to Noon for a review of current monitoring techniques, new supplies and fun identifying the macro-invertebrates that we find in Trout Creek. A potluck and fellowship will follow at noon. To get to the gathering turn on Trout Creek Road off of Hwy 61 while traveling between Soldiers Grove and Readstown. The major overhaul of Shoreland Zoning rules (NR115) after nearly 40 years will have a major impact on development in the Kickapoo Watershed. This is an important time to give your input. This is a public informational meeting concerning the methane digester and operation of Wild Rose Dairy which is a large innovative dairy farm in rural La Farge, Vernon County with about 1000 milking cows. The meeting will be at 7PM in the Conference Room of the WWTC, 220 S. Main St. in downtown Viroqua. Duane Popple, Agricultural Runoff Management Specialist for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), will lead the discussion. Mr. Popple has over 25 years of experience working in the environmental field, 15 years experience working with methane digesters and 6 years experience inspecting and issuing discharge permits for municipalities and industries including large dairy operations such as Wild Rose Dairy.
The benefits and concerns associated with the digester will be covered at the meeting including odor reduction, green energy production, possible threats to water quality and impacts on the land. An overview of the permitting process for the Wild Rose Dairy and the requirements established by the DNR will be presented. Plenty of time will be allowed for citizens to ask questions.
August 6 (Saturday): All the Way to the Top - Walk a New Prairie Restoration
Intrepid Regional Ecologist Armund Bartz will lead you up the steep slope of the Mississippi Valley Conservancy's (MVC) preserve at the Sugar Creek Bluff State Natural Area to see firsthand the restoration of the native prairie habitat. MVC staff and volunteers have been removing invasive cedar trees from the site since 1999. Come see the prairie grasses and wild flowers vigorously reclaiming their place in the sun! Favorites to watch for: blazing star, compass plant, side-oats grama and Indian grass. Time: 9AM - 11AM. Directions: Meet at 9AM at the end of Lagoon Rd., 1/2 mile south of Ferryville. Please do not block the gate at the endo fo the road when you park. Please note this hike will involve a difficult climb.
July 30 (Saturday): Kickapoo Country Fair
Visit the VSN booth and enjoy this great celebration of community and sustainability to benefit the Kickapoo Valley Reserve in La Farge. The second annual Kickapoo Country Fair is sponsored by Organic Valley and will feature organic farm tours, foods, music, dancing, arts, recreation and education programs by members of the Kickapoo Valley community.

June 25 (Saturday): Rope Techniques in the Woods
Arborist Brian Graham will demonstrate how ropes are used to direct and control the felling of trees on Saturday, June 25 at 10:00 am. Ropes are used in the woods to improve safety and reduce damage to buildings and desired trees. Graham will teach a few knots and how they are used, so participants may want to bring a length of rope for practicing the knots. Different types of rope will also be discussed, materials, weave patterns, test strength, and where to purchase them. Each year thousands of people from around the world celebrate the summer solstice at MREA's Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living Fair. This three-day festival is the world's largest venue to learn about renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable living. May 21 (Saturday): Nessler plantings at Red Buffalo Prairie in Vernon Co.
Spring flowers and native cool season grasses are the most neglected in planted prairies. Come see a success story or two and help search with me for more on 50 acres of prairies and woods surrounded by driftless vistas. I've had an excellent display of indian paintbrush and wood betony in the past with scattered patches of phlox, needlegrass and others. Any input to keep the process moving by you, would be most welcome. Hilly to level walking under two miles on and off trails. Directions: From Viroqua take hwy.56 (Decker Rd.) east towards Viola about ten miles make a left on Co. Hwy. S at the old Liberty store. Go about two miles. Just before the West Fork of the Kickapoo bridge, turn right on Elk Run Rd. Stay straight. We are one mile from the intersection on the left side (fire# S4855) a cream color farm house with brown trim.
May 21 (Saturday): Holland Sand Prairie in La Crosse County
The Coulee Region Chapter of the Prairie Enthusiasts will hold its chapter meeting at this newly preserved site. After a short meeting, we’ll tour this 60+ acre parcel that is largely covered by prairie on the sand terrace of the Mississippi River. Puccoons and Prairie Smoke are among the species likely to be in bloom. The walk will be near the road on fairly level terrain. Meeting and tour start at 10:00 AM and the the trip will be lead by Jim Rogala (608-786-1855). To get there Exit McHugh Road off HWY 35 north of Holmen. Go west approximately 1/2 mi. and park on the south side of the road.

9:00 - 3:00 at the Chalsma and N.E. Grasslands. Meet at the Chalsma prairie, this time to conduct a "prairie plant rescue" operation. Needed are some plant experts to help identify plants and supervise the digging, transport, and replanting (at the N.E. Grasslands). Please bring large pails, small tubs, or bushel baskets for holding/transporting the plants and root-balls (some plants we may bare-root transport though).
