The Assembly Jobs Committee just announced it will hold an official public hearing on the mining bill, AB 426. Register and speak out against AB 426 Wednesday, January 11, 2012, 10:00 a.m., at the Hurley Inn, 1000 10th Ave North, Hurley, WI. Rep. Williams is likely to allow testimony from mining supporters before opponents can speak (so bring a book or your knitting along, knowing it could be a LONG wait).
If you cannot attend this hearing please contact your legislators HERE to tell them to oppose this bill if you have not already done so.
Written by mining lobbyists, AB 426:
Requires DNR to make a permit decision within 360 days, and doesn’t allow DNR staff to critique the QUALITY of permit responses.
Eliminates citizen suits and contested case hearings needed to make sure that permit applications are scientifically sound.
Allows for the destruction of high quality wetlands, & allows mining waste to be deposited in floodplains and on shoreland areas.
Makes taxpayers foot the bill for permit reviews by capping mining company permit fees at $1.1 million dollars. It also shortchanges local governments by depositing 50% of the tax revenues from the mine into the state’s general fund (as opposed to providing 100% to the locally-impacted community).
