Steven Apfelbaum helped participants distinguish between native plants and invasive species and showed the characteristics of an ecological transition zone between wetlands and woodland during the VSN sponsored seminar "Recognizing Your Land's Ecosystem Health" held at Round River Institute near Romance, WI.
The Fifth Season Cooperative was officially launched as board members signed the articles of incorporation on August 10, 2010. This new business will connect producers of locally grown produce, meat and dairy, with institutional markets who want to buy local food for their cafeterias or restaurants. It is the result of months of planning and collaboration initiated through a Buy Local Buy Wisconsin Grant from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection that was awarded to the Vernon Economic Development Association in January, 2010.
On December 11, 2009 teams of students from four area high schools worked with mentor chefs to create meals from local ingredients. The resulting school lunches competed for judge's choice, student choice, and popular favorite, and the winning lunch will be served in the schools.
VSN members and staff gathered at the Kickapoo Reserve Visitor's Center for the annual Friendraiser on June 27th, 2009. Guest speaker was author Steven Apfelbaum.
