Kickapoo Conversations

In 2003 the Valley Stewardship Network put much energy into raising awareness of the importance of comprehensive planning in the watershed. Kickapoo Conversations was a structured exercise in community visioning held simultaneously in four locations throughout the watershed. It succeeded in bringing together over 250 people of diverse backgrounds, lengths of residency, and varied degrees of connection to the land to develop a “Vision Statement for the Kickapoo Valley in the year 2020.”

The final 100-page report, which includes a useful planning primer and list of resources, has been delivered to 49 units of government, civic and planning committees, libraries, and interested individuals within the watershed. VSN has also been successful in causing governments to accelerate their land monumentation programs, so that parcel mapping will eventually be possible.

Five years later, many of the projects and ideas talked about at the Kickapoo Conversations are already taking shape.
