Strategic Plan for Biological Inventories

VSN conducts biological inventories in order to aid landowners in making responsible management decisions based on good information, and ultimately to aid the comprehensive planning process by defining what’s out there, on the ground.

Key areas for the inventories are:

1. Land owner management concerns

a. prairie/savannah restoration
b. riparian buffers (grassy banks)
c. other concerns

2. Existing habitats

a. Plant and animal species
b. plant and animal associations communities
c. habitat quality and size

3. General hydrology (drainage & run-off)

4. Forest management and tree ID

5. Rare and invasive species

a. Prairie remnants, threatened species
b. Garlic mustard, buckthorn, honey suckle, multiflora rose, etc…

6. Connecting land owner with other resources/org./grants

a. EQIP, Managed forest law, CRP/ CREP
b. Kickapoo Woods Co-op, Prairie Enthusiasts, Mississippi Valley Conservancy

7. General

a. Soil layer
b. Animal signs

8. Organizational

a. Compiling existing data of the area connecting;
i. other rare/invasive species reports
ii. forest patches and i.d. possible corridors

9. Monitoring

a. keeping in touch with land owner
b. monitoring growth/recession of rare or invasive species populations (in response to mgmt or no mgmt).
